Schools Aerospace Challenge

Prize Winners  

 

2011

‘Impulse’ from the JCB Academy was selected on the quality of their submission and their performance at Cranfield. They received the £3000 prize during the ceremony by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton on Wednesday 9 November 2011. They are pictured here with him (on far right), Professor Rod Smith, President of Institution of Mechanical Engineers (on his left) and Chief of Materiel, Air Marshal Kevin Leeson (far left).

2011 Runner-Up

For the first time in the competition's history, prizes were awarded to two runner-up teams.

C.H.A.F.F. (Clevedon High-tech Aeronautical Facility) from 1446 (Clevedon) Sqn ATC were were selected as a Runner-uppresented with £1000. They are pictured with Chief of Materiel, Air Marshal Kevin Leeson (far left), Professor Rod Smith, President of Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton (on far right). The Clevedon Kestrels won the 2010 challenge so to be placed again in a subsequent year is a real achievement.

2011 Runner-Up

Team Mach 1 from 1461 (Wigston) Sqn ATC were were selected as a Runner-up presented with £1000. They are pictured with Chief of Materiel, Air Marshal Kevin Leeson (far left), Professor Rod Smith, President of Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton (on far right).

 

  

 

 

 

 

  

 

  • 2010

    Clevedon Kestrels from 1446 (Clevedon) Squadron ATC were the winning team. They are pictured here with (from left to right) Stephen Tetlow, AM Kevin Leeson, CAS Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton and Deputy President of IMechE, Professor Isobel Pollock at an awards ceremony held at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in November 2010.

 

  • 2009

    The winners, Team TTT from St Paul's School, London with ACM Sir Stephen Dalton, then: Andrew Simmons, Jonathan Carr, Josh Humber, AM Kevin Leeson, Allan Gardam, Keith Millard and Stephen Tetlow.

 

  • 2008

    The two winning teams, Team Penderfyniad from 499 (Port Talbot) Sqn ATC with their prizes.  In the top photograph is Team Penderfyniad: (L-R) Air Marshal Sir Barry Thornton, Chief of Defence Materiel (Air), WO Cadet Gethin Davies, Sgt Cadets Jonathan Glave and Gareth Havard with Commanding Officer Flt Lt Mike Stones and Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Glenn Torpy.

    Winners for 2007 were The Flying Circus from King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford. (from L-R) Air Marshal Sir Barry Thornton, Professor William Banks Deputy President IMechE , Michael Lawson, Christopher Bridge, Air Chief Marshal Sir Glenn Torpy, Jason Pompeus, Ashley Lampshire, Dr Mike Walker, Headmaster and Ms Penny Bunting, Engineering Co-coordinator at King Edward VI Grammar School Chelmsford.

    Penderfyniad from 499 (Port Talbot) Squadron Air Training Corps with AVM Stephen Dalton, the Rt Hon Adam Ingram MP, ACM Sir Glenn Torpy and Alec Osborn, President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers at the awards ceremony held at IMechE Headquarters on Wednesday 8 November 2006.

  • 2004

    Team Lunar Prospector from Leeds Grammar School with Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, Mr Andrew Ives, Air Vice Marshal Stephen Dalton and John Farley at the (back row) at the Awards Ceremony at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London.

 

  • 2003

    The captain of Team Harrier receives the trophy from HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. HRH attended this ceremony to mark 100 years of powered flight being celebrated throughout 2003.

 

  • 2002

    The winners of the 2002 Schools Aerospace Challenge were Team Pegasus from Oldbury Wells School in Shropshire. This was the second time they had won. They were presented with their prize trophy by the Rt Hon Adam Ingram MP, Minister for the Armed Forces and AVM Barry Thornton, Controller Aircraft DPA at an Awards Ceremony held at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in November of that year.

 

  • 2001

    The winning team from The Latymer School in North London with the Rt Hon Adam Ingram MP, Minister for the Armed Forces and Mr Tony Roche, President of the IMechE at an awards ceremony held at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in November of that year.

 

  • 2000

     Team Pegasus, Oldbury Wells School in Shropshire were the winning team. They received their prize from Sir Richard Evans, Chairman and Chief Executive of BAE Systems at an awards ceremony held at the Royal Aeronautical Society in November 2000.
